Critical path
The critical path is the longest chain of interdependent tasks in a project. It sets the earliest possible end date. Tasks on the critical path have no slack: if one is delayed, the whole project end moves by the same amount.
Why it matters
Knowing the critical path tells you where a delay becomes costly and where there is room. Resources and attention can then be directed at the tasks that actually hold the deadline.
How to spot it
- Determine the earliest and latest start for each task.
- Tasks where the two coincide have no slack.
- The continuous chain of those tasks forms the critical path.

The critical path in building construction
On site it usually runs through the chain of earthworks, structure, striking formwork, envelope and fit-out – because each of these steps technically conditions the next. But looking only at that chain misses the two most common causes of a slipped completion date.
The first is lead times: components measured on the finished structure carry their production time into the middle of the sequence. The second is drying times during fit-out. Both look like idle time on the schedule and yet often sit precisely on the critical path – which is why they belong in it as tasks of their own.
