From Excel to a schedule
Many schedules begin in Excel. For a small project that is often enough. But as soon as tasks depend on each other and dates shift one another, a spreadsheet reaches its limits.
How to spot the limit
- You recalculate dates by hand after every shift.
- No one is sure which version is the current one.
- Dependencies are written as a note, not as a link.
- The printout does not fit cleanly onto a readable sheet.
What a real schedule does better
In a Gantt plan, dependencies are real links. If a task moves, the following dates adjust automatically. The critical path shows which chain sets the end date.
The transition
Start with the essential tasks and their order, not with every detail. Add durations and dependencies, then check the critical path. The existing structure from the spreadsheet is a good starting point.
